Newfoundland is rapidly growing in popularity as both a tourist and second-home destination over the past five years. The Humber Valley region is an unspoiled, un-crowded wonderland and is the kind of place where parents can let their kids roam and play freely without worrying about them.
Humber Valley was one of Canada's best kept secrets but it is now becoming discovered by Europeans and North Americans looking for a home away from home.
The valley offers a wealth of winter and summer activities. Thirty-five groomed ski runs are available at Marble Mountain, which is a three-minute walk from Humber River Suites.
Marble Mountain is a foothill of the Appalachians, which stretch right down to Georgia in the US. The Marble Mountain resort includes a ski school, a terrain park, snow tubing, a half-pipe, a base lodge and cafeteria.
Long before skiing became popular, Corner Brook, the local town, was known for salmon fishing on the world famous Humber River. Since the last century, salmon anglers have taken advantage of the slow deep steadies to cast for champion Atlantic salmon. The mighty Humber River which runs just at the edge of Humber River Suites still defines the difference between fishing and great fishing.
Kayaking and hiking through Newfoundland's most inspiring and dramatic vistas has become a very popular summer activity where you can see massive Humpback Whales, soaring Eagles, Moose, Caribou, the occassional Bear and the most staggering displays of nature. Icebergs can be spotted as they begin to float south during the summer.
You can stop at the roadside and purchase fresh fruit and vegetables in season. Each year the farmers of the valley hold a Strawberry Festival.
